Position-aware packet loss optimization on service function chain placement

The advent of Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Service Chains (SFCs) unleashes the power dynamic creation network services using Virtual Functions (VNFs). This is great interest to operators since poor service quality resource wastage can potentially hurt their revenue in long term. However, study shows with a set test-bed experiments that packet loss at certain positions (i.e., different VNFs) an SFC cause various degrees performance degradation because repeated upstream processing transmission retransmitted packets. To overcome this challenge, focuses on scheduling deployment SFCs while considering positions. developed novel dropping cost model formulated problem aims minimize overall as Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) proved it NP-hard. In study, Palosis proposed efficient scheme exploiting functional characteristics VNFs for resources optimize cost. Extensive experiment results show Palos achieve up 42.73% improvement 33.03% reduction average latency when compared two other state-of-the-art schemes.
